Appointed to the UNL music faculty in 1974, Dr. Fought was the Director of the Cornhusker Marching Band from 1975 to 1983. During that time the band frequently appeared at high school, college, and professional football games. Performances at annual post-season bowl games included the Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, Astro-Bluebonnet, Liberty, and Sun Bowls. Dr. Fought was Director of Bands at UNL from 1983 to 1992. Under his direction the Symphony Band earned state, regional, and national recognition with performances at professional meetings and conventions, including the College Band Directors National Convention and the Music Educators National Conference. Dr. Fought was the Interim Director of the School of Music from 2000 to 2003. He served as Associate Director from 1994 to 2000.

Dr. Fought received his undergraduate and doctorate degrees from the Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University. He studied band performance techniques with John Paynter and James Dunlop, and he is a former saxophone student of Frederick Hemke. Previous positions include Director of Bands and Chairman of the Wind and Percussion Department at Syracuse University, with earlier teaching experience at Evanston (Illinois) Township High School and Adams State College in Colorado.

Dr. Fought has appeared as guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and soloist in the central United States and Canada. Dr. Fought received citations for "Outstanding Contributions to Students" from the University of Nebraska and is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Arts and Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University. He also has received distinguished service awards from the Nebraska Music Educators Association and the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association. He is a Past-President of the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association.
